Southern-East Area (Lesser Poland and Lublin Basin)

Kraków is no doubt a capital of Lesser Poland, it is a historic and touristic pearl. It’s a city of old walls, history, countless museums but also of marvellous diners and cafes, right in the middle of the road between Warsaw and Vienna.
Once there, experience the atmosphere of the city with no rush, take your time walking on the Market Square, listen to the bugle call, preferably after sunset. One must also see the Wawel castle, take a look at “Lady with an Ermine” in Czartoryscy Family Museum, take a walk by Vistula banks and Planty, roam around former Jewish district – Kazimierz. It’s also worth seeing the Wit Stwosz’s alter or stained glass works by Wyspiański.
Besides Kraków, Lesser Poland has many other attractions. One of them is a salt mine in Wieliczka or the oldest salt wells in Bochnia. It’s a mountain area too, with beautiful Pieniny, majestic Tatry or southern part of Jura.
Lesser Poland is a historic place with two death camps form the WWII – Auschwitz and Brzezinka, the Hitler’s mean of society extermination and country plundering. Lesser Poland borders with Lublin Basin – a picturesque, hilly area and unique lakes. The area’s capital is Lublin, once a political centre filled with great heritage sites such as Old Town, the castle with amazing polychrome in Trinity Chapel or late renaissance Dominican order church.

Lublin Basin has a specific atmosphere echoing joyful Hasidic songs, old Jewish towns’ buzz that stopped suddenly and forever. This echo remains in synagogues, mikvahs and cirkuts that are left there. But Lublin area is also a place marked by yet another former Hitler’s death camp –Majdanek.
In north-east of the region there’s a city of Zamość, called “Padwa of the North”, once a mosaic of nations and religions, today a city recognized by UNESCO’s list of world cultural heritage. It’s close by to see Zwierzyniec or Szczebrzeszyn. It’s also a home of a town called “little Gdańsk” – Kazimierz Dolny, full of past heritage marks such as King Kazimierz The Great’s castle.
