Southern-West Area

Southern-West Area (Upper and Lower Silesia)

Western part of Poland composes, among others, of the Piast Trail that runs through north-eastern Greater Poland and western Kuyavia. The major points of the Trail are Poznań – the capital of Grater Poland, Gniezno, Biskupin or Kruszwica.
The place is worth visiting due to numerous historical souvenir stops but most of all due to precious architectural cites dating the very origins of Poland. It is Gniezno and Kruszwica where legends of St. Wojciech or King Popiel are still vivid. Poznań used to be the city of Mieszko I, centuries later – bastion of warfare with invaders. It is a city of great architectural structures, particularly the public ones . It remains a vivid economic and cultural centre. When in Poznań one should take promenades on Ostrów Tumski and the Poznań Market Square, also see so called guards’ cottages with characteristic arcades or take a moment at Bamberka’s well. It is necessary to be a guest of the Royal Castle that used to be the home of Greater Poland princes. Other places to visit are Raczyńscy family Library or Adam Mickiewicz’s University with its fine acoustic halls. North of the city one shall find a wine hill changed into a fortress in XIX c.
Poznań also includes Malta – a lake with a regatta trail on the other side of Warta river. It’s important to know that Poznań is a host city of International Fairs. Not far from the city, one shall find a picturesque palace and park of Rogalin with the oldest European clusters of oak trees. Kórnik Castle is yet another place to stop – its halls and rooms are filled with antique furniture and international art pieces of various times.
When in Greater Poland one must not miss Gniezno –the first capital city of Poland, the place of coronation of 5 kings, in its archcathedral one can admire the famous Gniezno Doors presenting scenes of St. Wojciech’s life. Bikupin is a little town where you may visit a famous archaeological reservation with well kept pieces of defence estate dating Sorbian culture.
The Grater Poland is a legendary capital of Poland as well – Kruszwica with its famous Mice Tower – remains of a gothic castle build by King Kazimierz the Great.

Wrocław is one of the greatest, most beautiful and most interesting cities in Poland. One shall see architectural masterpieces of all times, cosmopolitism, avant-garde, decadence of an old metropolis as well as Europe’ peripheral atmosphere. There’s plenitude of bridges, parks, public buildings, offering cultural treat and entertainment. Traditionally speaking, Wrocław is the capital of Lower Silesia. When on top of Wrocław’s cathedral tower, you may admire massifs of Ślęża Mountain, and Middle Sudety elevations on a clear day. Once in Wrocław, you must visit the following: the Market Square, the Town Hall, Jaś and Małgosia’s Tenement and in the evening hours – at times of fairy illumination – you should visit Ostrów Tumski (yes – same name as in Poznań). One shall not miss a visit to Panorama Racławicka and a splendid Leopoldine’s Hall in the main building of the University of Wrocław.
The city is filled with landscape’s extremes. On the one hand – multiple touristic attractions, on the other – almost virgin terrains. You shall encounter both European class heritage sites as well as deep peripheral atmosphere. It’s again both natural distinctiveness of lowlands mixed with massifs reaching above 700 metres. When already outside the city, it’s worthwhile to take a tour round the Książ Castle or post Cistercian complexes in Krzeszów and Henryków or mine tunnels in Osówka and Sowie Mountains.
